My Neighbor Totoro Baby Shower Invite

Here’s something I did last year for some friends of mine; they needed an invitation made up for a baby shower and wanted something a little different, so they asked if I could do something with Totoro and pals from the (fantastic) Studio Ghibli movie My Neighbor Totoro. This was a lot of fun to do, even though it was fairly simple, and apparently Travis & Jessica were very happy with it too!

(I actually finally got to meet their kid a few weeks back, and she is just adorable!)

Fun with Wheatley

More Portal 2 art! Animated pixel piece of Chell and Wheatley this time, kinda inspired by oktotally’s kickass stuff.

As far as I’m aware, this is my first attempt at pixel animation (or pixel art at all for that matter), kinda happy with how it turned out!

Chell

So I drew Chell from Portal 2 during a sketch warmup, and then got a little carried away with it. (Click to embiggen)

Posted this up on my new Tumblr, where I’ll hopefully be uploading some extra stuff from time to time, on a more casual basis!

Character illustration by Chris Spain

Touchstones Marketing asked me to design and illustrate a series of character pieces for use in a presentation for The Rainbow Seeker; these needed to communicate the overall message of each slide, whilst at the same time fitting in and around the main content, and corresponding to the individual slides’ colour schemes (each one representing a different colour of the rainbow).

Last week, whilst trying to draw the Harry Potter comic, I could not stop sneezing. So since I couldn’t really concentrate on drawing, I decided to just work through it with a speedpainting; this guy turned out to be a bit of a therapist in that respect! (I’m considering forcing myself to do at least one of these per week, depending on how much free time I have; you can subscribe to the RSS feed if you want to stay updated, as I’ll be uploading them on this blog as they come!)

Took about 2-3 hrs total, though a fair part of that was spent sneezing >w<

As You're Up Comic: Nomination Domination

Time for this week’s comic strip!

So hey, As You’re Up has been nominated for two Smack Jeeves Awards, in the categories Best Gag-A-Day and Most Improved Artwork! Gotta say that was a very pleasant surprise!

So to anyone and everyone who nominated us, thank you so much—this strip is officially dedicated to you folks (moreso than usual)! And a hearty thanks to anybody voting for us, too!

I’m gonna suggest that you mosey on over to take a gander at the awards—not specifically to vote for us, but rather to check out all the comics that have been nominated in each category. There’s some really awesome stuff up there, some of which I hadn’t caught before; a wonderfully diverse and impassioned range of comics, which is what the Awards are celebrating!

I was shocked and somewhat speechless when I heard the news—that last night, on Monday 21st of June, comedian Chris Sievey, aka Frank Sidebottom, passed away. I couldn’t help but be moved to make my own, small tribute to the man, who never failed to make me laugh…

Tomayto Tomahto

Had an idea and a little extra time before heading to bed last night—figured I’d throw together a little typographic illustration while I was still up and feeling the design vibe!

A quick and fun type treatment based on the classic “you say tomayto, I say tomahto,” example of different dialects and pronunciations based on geographical location. I started out without worrying about making it too immediately legible; as I got into it, that began to seem more and more fitting, further emphasizing the concept of a language barrier within the one language itself.

One of the somewhat refreshing aspects of working on a design or illustration for purely personal means—the ability to focus on form entirely independent of function (not something I believe should ever be encouraged within design, but I find giving myself less orthodox challenges helps to keep me on my toes)!

Hey Guess What, I Made a Book – it has stuff in it. Funnily enough, that’s also the title! The book is 12 pages and features a selection of works from my potrfolio.

Hey Guess What - Logo Designs

It’s currently available to download for free right here – or, if you prefer, you can purchase a hard copy for the-not-all-that-outrageously-extortionate price of £5.

I took some photos of my copy once it arrived; I’m rather pleased with how it came out:

Vora

I recently had the opportunity to create another digital painting, this time in the form of a character I’m really looking forward to reading more about – Vora, Princess of the Skies. I was able to have a bit of fun with the layout and theme of this one; didn’t want to go for anything too stereotypical, but instead play around a little more with the underlying theme and allegory.

This is one of the few comics which is entirely fictional. Couldn’t be helped though; political cartoons just don’t sit right with me. At least the ones I’ve seen so far, which basically amount to a metaphor so far extended that its original meaning becomes ambiguous to the point of insignificance.

Also I guess I just kinda feel like getting to label stuff is cheating! ;P

(As a sidenote, I’m not suggesting that political cartoonists aren’t talented. Just that, to me, the nature of the cartoons themselves is just… kinda… yeeeaah.)
